Day 1: Orientation
Welcome to Buddhism 101! This journey is designed for those new to Buddhism or wishing to deepen understanding of Mahayana Buddhism as practiced in Bhutan. Afternoon: Introduction lecture covering Buddha's life, Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, and the evolution of Buddhism from India to Bhutan. Evening meditation primer - basic breathing techniques and posture. Overnight: Paro or Thimphu
Day 2: Buddha's Teachings
Morning dharma talk on the fundamental Buddhist concepts: suffering, impermanence, karma, and rebirth. Interactive Q&A with a learned lama. Afternoon visit to National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu. Watch devotees practicing circumambulation, prostrations, and mantra recitation. Your guide explains each practice. Practice spinning prayer wheels and making offerings. Overnight: Thimphu
Day 3: Mahayana vs Hinayana
Lecture on the three vehicles (yanas) of Buddhism: Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Bhutan practices Vajrayana, a form of Mahayana Buddhism. Understand Bodhisattva path, compassion, and emptiness philosophy. Afternoon visit to Textile Museum and Simply Bhutan to understand how Buddhism shapes daily Bhutanese life. Overnight: Thimphu
Day 4: Tango University
Hike to Tango Buddhist University (2 hours uphill) where monks study for 9 years earning Buddhist philosophy degrees. This is Bhutan's highest monastic institution. Attend lecture by Buddhist scholar on specific topic (debate philosophy, meditation techniques, or tantra). Ask questions and engage in philosophical discussions. Watch young monks debating in the courtyard - a spectacular practice where monks clap and stamp while challenging opponents' logic. Return to Thimphu. Overnight: Thimphu
Day 5: Thimphu to Punakha
Drive to Punakha. En route visit Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan's first fortress and center for Buddhist language studies. Lecture on Tantric Buddhism and its practices, mantras, and symbolism. Afternoon at Punakha Dzong during evening prayers. Experience the chanting, horns, and drums of monastic rituals. Overnight: Punakha
Day 6: Buddhist Cosmology
Morning lecture on Buddhist cosmology - the six realms of existence, Mt. Meru, and the Buddhist universe. Visit Chimi Lhakhang to understand the role of "crazy wisdom" in Buddhism through stories of the Divine Madman. Afternoon practice session: prostrations and offering rituals. Overnight: Punakha
Day 7: Meditation Practice
Full day meditation intensive in a quiet monastery or temple setting. Morning session: Shamatha (calm abiding) meditation. Afternoon session: Vipassana (insight) meditation. Guidance from experienced meditation master. Learn to work with thoughts, develop concentration, and cultivate mindfulness. Evening: Walking meditation and loving-kindness practice. Overnight: Punakha
Day 8: Punakha to Paro
Return to Paro valley. Lecture on death, bardo (intermediate state), and rebirth in Buddhist philosophy. Visit Dungtse Lhakhang to see murals depicting the Buddhist universe, deities, and hell realms. Overnight: Paro
Day 9: Review & Integration
Morning review session covering all major concepts learned. Q&A to clarify doubts. Discuss how to integrate Buddhist principles into daily life back home. Receive recommended reading list and practice guidance. Afternoon: Create your own prayer flags with wishes and aspirations. Hang them at a sacred site. Early rest to prepare for tomorrow's challenging hike. Overnight: Paro
Day 10: Tiger's Nest Pilgrimage
Today is the culmination of your spiritual journey - the iconic hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest). The challenging climb becomes a moving meditation, putting Buddhist principles into practice. The monastery clings impossibly to a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the Paro valley. The hike takes 4-5 hours round trip. At the monastery, receive teachings on Guru Rinpoche and how Buddhism spread to Bhutan. Meditate in the sacred caves where the great master attained realization. Day 11: Departure
