Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Paro
Welcome to Bhutan for the Jomolhari Base Camp trek! After arrival, gentle acclimatization walk around Paro valley (2,235m). Visit Paro Dzong and Ta Dzong National Museum. Evening trek briefing, gear check, and meeting with your trekking crew. Overnight: Hotel in Paro
Day 2: Paro Acclimatization
Acclimatization day. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang and surrounding temples. Gentle walks in Paro valley to help your body adjust to altitude. Avoid strenuous activity today to save energy for the trek. Afternoon final preparations and packing. Overnight: Hotel in Paro
Day 3: Shana to Thangthangka
Drive to Shana trailhead (2,850m). Begin trekking up the Paro Chhu valley through blue pine forests. The trail gradually ascends following the river. Camp at Thangthangka (3,610m) in a wide valley clearing. Trekking: 5-6 hours, 22km, +760m Overnight: Camp
Day 4: Thangthangka to Jangothang
Continue up the valley, emerging above treeline into alpine meadows. The landscape opens dramatically as you approach base camp. Reach Jangothang (4,040m), one of Bhutan's most spectacular campsites. Mount Jomolhari (7,326m) towers directly above camp, its massive face rising 3,000m into the sky. The sacred mountain dominates the horizon - an unforgettable sight. Day 5: Rest Day at Base Camp
Critical acclimatization day at Jomolhari base camp. Optional day hikes to explore the area. Hike to the twin Tshophu Lakes, sacred glacial lakes beneath Jomolhari. The turquoise waters and mountain reflections create magical scenery. Watch for Blue Sheep on rocky slopes. Alternatively, hike toward Jomolhari's actual base camp and glaciers for closer mountain views. Photography opportunities are endless. Evening back at camp, enjoying the mountain environment. Day 6: Jangothang to Lingshi
Trek north crossing Nyile La pass (4,870m), a challenging but rewarding climb. From the pass, spectacular views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherimgang peaks. Descend past stone walls and yak pastures to Lingshi valley. Lingshi Dzong sits dramatically on a rocky outcrop guarding the border region. Camp near Lingshi village (4,010m). Day 7: Lingshi to Chebisa
Trek through barren high-altitude terrain following the Kango Chhu river beneath towering cliffs. The landscape is wild and dramatic. Reach Chebisa (3,880m), a picturesque stone village with spectacular waterfall backdrop. Camp in the village area. Trekking: 5-6 hours, 12km, -130m Overnight: Camp at Chebisa
Day 8: Chebisa to Shomuthang
Cross Bonte La pass (4,890m), the trek's highest point. The climb is steep but views from the pass are extraordinary - the full Bhutanese Himalayan range stretches before you. Descend to Shomuthang (4,220m), a remote yak pasture valley. This is true wilderness - no villages, just pristine mountain environment. Trekking: 6-7 hours, 17km, +530m/-670m Overnight: Camp at Shomuthang
Day 9: Shomuthang to Robluthang
Cross Jarela pass (4,750m) through spectacular high-altitude scenery. The landscape is barren and beautiful - glacial valleys, snow peaks, and crystal streams. Camp at Robluthang (4,160m). Trekking: 6-7 hours, 18km, +530m/-570m Overnight: Camp at Robluthang
Day 10: Robluthang to Dodena
Final trekking day. Descend gradually through changing vegetation zones - alpine tundra gives way to scrub, then forests. Reach Dodena roadhead by afternoon. Drive to Thimphu (3 hours) for hot showers and celebration dinner. Trekking: 5-6 hours, 16km, -1,160m descent Overnight: Hotel in Thimphu
Day 11: Tiger's Nest Hike
Drive to Paro (1 hour from Thimphu). The perfect finale to your Himalayan expedition: Hiking to Tiger's Nest. With your trek-hardened legs and lungs, you'll float up the trail! Enjoy this sacred site without the struggle of altitude. Explore the monastery complex and reflect on your journey from the base of Jomolhari to the Tiger's Nest. Farewell dinner. Overnight: Paro
Day 12: Departure
Transfer to Paro for departure. You've trekked to the base of sacred Jomolhari, crossed high passes, and experienced Bhutan's remote mountain wilderness. The memories of the mighty mountain will stay with you forever. Tashi Delek!
