Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Paro

Day 2: Paro: Trail Begins

The Trans Bhutan Trail officially begins. Start walking from Paro Dzong, following the ancient path through farmland and villages. Pass Drukgyel Dzong ruins and traditional villages. The trail is well-marked and maintained. Walking: 12km, 5-6 hours Overnight: Homestay or lodge

Day 3: Paro to Thimphu Section

Continue on the trail crossing ridges and valleys. Pass through pine forests and traditional settlements. The path offers constant views and cultural encounters with local farmers and villagers. Walking: 15km, 6-7 hours Overnight: Outskirts of Thimphu

Day 4: Thimphu Exploration

Rest day in the capital. Visit key sites including Buddha Dordenma, National Memorial Chorten, and local markets. Afternoon free to explore Thimphu's unique blend of tradition and modernity. Overnight: Thimphu

Day 5: Thimphu to Punakha Trail

Resume walking. Cross Dochula Pass on foot (not by road), descending into the Mo Chhu valley toward Punakha. The trail passes through rhododendron forests and remote villages rarely seen by tourists. Walking: 18km, 7-8 hours Overnight: Village homestay

Day 6: Punakha Section

Continue through Punakha valley. The trail follows ancient routes beside rice paddies and through traditional villages. Visit Punakha Dzong, the magnificent "Palace of Great Happiness." Walking: 14km, 5-6 hours Overnight: Punakha

Day 7: Punakha to Trongsa Trail

Day 8: Trongsa Section

Arrive at Trongsa, the ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family. Explore the massive Trongsa Dzong. The Ta Dzong museum showcases royal artifacts and sacred relics. Walking: 12km, 5 hours Overnight: Trongsa

Day 9: Trongsa to Bumthang Trail

Trek through forests and over Yotong La Pass into the sacred Bumthang valley - Buddhism's heartland in Bhutan. The landscape opens to reveal broad valleys and ancient temples. Walking: 18km, 7-8 hours Overnight: Bumthang

Day 10: Bumthang Sacred Sites

Rest day exploring Bumthang's sacred temples: Jambay Lhakhang (7th century), Kurjey Lhakhang where Guru Rinpoche meditated, and Jakar Dzong. Visit local farms producing cheese, honey, and apple products. Overnight: Bumthang

Day 11: Return Journey

Morning transfer to Bathpalathang airstrip for the 35-minute domestic flight back to Paro - watching the ridgelines you walked slip past below (flight subject to schedule; a two-day overland return via Trongsa and Dochula Pass can be arranged instead). Afternoon at leisure in Paro. Reflect on your Trans Bhutan Trail experience. Farewell dinner celebrating your achievement. Overnight: Paro

Day 12: Departure

Optional morning Tiger's Nest hike for the ambitious (4-5 hours) or leisure time in Paro. Transfer to airport for departure.
